BELT PAINTING TUTORIAL

A Plain Yellow Belt Can Go Any Way You Want It To, Texture And Colorwise.

By Michael Paoletti
This process is very simple in terms of execution but
a bit tricky in Technique. Thats where practice comes
in. It took me awhile to perfect the Items used..What
paints and such. I have experience with paints. I hope
your able to acheive the look you desire.
When I started out, My goal wasnt to achieve a movie
replica belt color scheme..It was to totally fool the
eye. And make it difficult to tell what the belt is
made of. Is it metal? Hard Plastic?
First you must Aquire the right materials. You'll need
three types of paint. Each a tad darker then The next.
The Colors I use are BRASS, ANTIQUE GOLD, GOLD And
COPPER (USE COPPER VERY SPARINGLY)
The secret Of the Process is WOOD STAIN, Yes Wood
stain..Be sure its WATER BASED. Anything with mineral
spirits will over time desolve Latex!!!! You can
choose anything from GOLDEN OAK color for more of a
brassish color or use what I did on my Artsee
Belt..ROSEWOOD..and plenty of paper towels.
Now that you have the materials..find a comfortable
area to work where you can move your body around the
belt with ease.
find a area to With ventilation...Clean the belt..Wash
it and let it dry..Then paint the stain over a portion
of the belt..If you paint more then you can handle the
stain will soak in and you will end up with crap.
The trick is to paint and dab the excess stain
off..What remains will be a dark rich yellow color and
the cracks will have stain in them..You can do the
cracks over to acheive more affect, But i do not
recommend doing the open belt areas again..You have a
hard time blending anything then. Do the same over the
belt buckle and dab off the raised highlights until
The grooves are darker. Change your paper towel
often..Otherwise you'll be re-applying what you just
took off!
DO NOT leave the stain setting to much..The belt is
somewhat pourous..The longer you leave it the darker
it'll be..your timed! Its stressful! do this over the
entire belt until you acheve the look that suits
you..Remember, let some of the original yellow come
through..It'll enhance the look later when you apply
the brass paints.
The brass paints I used are simply found at a craft
store..I Avoid rustolym brand and Krylon..Use Craft
spray paint. Your ready to paint the belt now. Paint i
lightly! Start with your darker paints and work to the
Lighter...Dont COAT the belt, Mist it. And spary from
an angle so the spray catches all the highlights and
angles..
After all your brass paints have been put on use
copper ONCE and lightly from about 4-3 feet
away...Your Done..Leave your belt overnight and your
read to go!! Email me with Questions..
